Welcome to BonTech Labs – Where Technology Gets Tested

Hello, and welcome to BonTech Labs.

I’m Gavin Bonshor, founder and editor of this new technology-focused review and news website. I’ve been fascinated by technology for as long as I can remember — from building PCs to digging into benchmarks, from late-night driver updates to heated debates about CPUs vs. GPUs. Over the years, I’ve realized that what the tech world needs most is clear, honest, and in-depth coverage. An unbiased opinion without all the fluff that companies want you to write, but more about the truth, the facts, and what users really want to hear. That’s what BonTech Labs is here to deliver.

Who am I? Where have I been?

For many years, I’ve been a UK-based technology journalist and hardware analyst with a passion for real insight and factual clarity. Before I launched BonTech Labs, I spent years immersed in the world of PC architecture and semiconductor analysis.

Previously, I worked with Play3r, but most notably, I served as Senior Editor at AnandTech, where I led the team covering CPUs, motherboards, and system architecture through the development of the Zen series. I wrote in-depth reviews of flagship processors like the Zen 5-based Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X, among others, along with deep coverage of laptop APUs, embedded chips, and live event reporting around Computex—always focused on technical precision and usability.

A year ago last month (August 2024), Future PLC, the owner of AnandTech, closed the site, which in turn left me unemployed. A month ago, AnandTech removed all traces of the site, including all of the content over its illustrious existence; this upsets me, but life goes on.

After my time there, I worked at The Register as a Systems Reporter, where I focused on client-side processors and semiconductor developments. My reporting style was always pretty blunt but grounded. An in-depth analysis without overhyping, and writing that called things exactly as they were. I departed from the Register in January 2025.

A lot of people have asked, “Where did I go?” The truth? I suffered greatly with my mental health, and that is pretty much that. As of today, given the lack of opportunities within the tech media landscape (many media companies have been scaling back their outfits of late), I have decided to create BonTech Labs, which is my personal blog of sorts. Whether this remains to be a long-term thing depends on whether the readership wants to continue reading my content, which it has done on a big scale from my time at AnandTech and The Register.

Despite my troubles and mental health problems over the last year, which a lot of it is due to burning out (single dad of two autistic boys and a full-time tech journalism career at a high level with little to no breaks in between), I’m back to my usual and perky/critical/blunt self.

What You Can Expect

At BonTech Labs, I aim to focus on:

  • Reviews — unbiased, detail-oriented breakdowns of computer hardware, peripherals, and emerging tech.

  • Testing & Benchmarks — real-world performance numbers you can trust.

  • Investigative Articles — digging deeper into the industry, from manufacturing trends to consumer issues.

  • Tech News & Commentary — covering the latest developments with analysis that cuts through the noise.

Why “Labs”?

I chose the name BonTech Labs because this isn’t just about opinions — it’s about testing, experimenting, and proving results. Every piece of content here will be driven by data and careful analysis, with a focus on what matters most to users.

Let’s Build This Together

Although this site is just getting started, I want it to grow into a place where I would love to hear from you: Whether it’s feedback on reviews, requests for testing specific hardware (budget/company support permitting), or just sharing your own builds and experiences, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks for stopping by. This is only the beginning, and I can’t wait to share what’s next.
