Promise: No “OC roulette.” This handbook focuses on vendor-documented features that are safe, reversible, and deliver repeatable gains: Resizable BAR, Above 4G Decoding, PBO/Curve Optimizer (AMD), TVB/ABT (Intel), memory context options, and power/thermal ceilings.
Step 1 — Update BIOS & set a rollback plan
- Flash the latest stable BIOS for memory/USB4/PCIe fixes.
- Back up current settings. If you crash, clear CMOS and reload last known-good.
Enable Resizable BAR correctly
Why: Lets the CPU address the full GPU framebuffer; many titles see a small uplift for free.
- Disable CSM/legacy boot. Enable Above 4G Decoding and Resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory on AMD). Save & reboot.
- Update GPU drivers and (if required) VBIOS.
- Verify enablement in GPU-Z or the vendor control panel.
Memory: fast and stable
Start with XMP/EXPO, then make small, conservative tweaks. See our XMP vs EXPO playbook for a step-by-step. Validate with long mixed workloads, not just quick benchmarks.
AMD: Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) & Curve Optimizer (CO)
- What they do: PBO lifts power/current limits; CO offsets the V/F curve per core to reduce voltage for a given frequency.
- Safe start: PBO “Enabled/AMD Spec.” Try CO negative −5 to −15 on best cores; test all-core/single-thread/gaming. Keep CCD temps in check; consider Eco Mode for small coolers.
Intel: Turbo policies that help
Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) and related turbo policies add bins when thermal headroom exists. Ensure your cooler can sustain it, and set sensible PL1/PL2 limits for noise-normalized performance.
Memory training & boot time (AM5)
Memory Context Restore and “Power Down” cache the last successful training to speed boot. Enable only after stability is proven—bad cached params can hide marginal OCs.
Power/thermal ceilings
Set a firm CPU temperature target (e.g., 85–90 °C). You’ll trade a couple points of peak for steadier clocks and much better acoustics.
Checklist
- ✔ BIOS up to date; chipset/GPU drivers current.
- ✔ UEFI boot, Above 4G, Resizable BAR.
- ✔ XMP/EXPO → long mixed stability tests.
- ✔ AMD: PBO “Enabled/AMD Spec”; CO small negative per-core; re-test.
- ✔ Intel: TVB/ABT on (within cooler limits); sensible PL1/PL2.
- ✔ Enable Memory Context Restore only after proving stability.
